Student financial requirements are among the few areas of immigration where the rules are arithmetic rather than judgement. That is good news, because arithmetic can be checked, and bad news, because a day short is a day short.
What the requirement is measuring
Most study routes require you to show that you can pay your course fees for the first year, or the outstanding balance of them, plus living costs for a defined number of months at a published rate. The purpose is to establish that you will not run out of money and be forced to work beyond your permitted hours or leave the course.
The figures are set by the authority and revised periodically. Use the current published rates for your destination and, where relevant, for the specific location of your institution, since living-cost rates often differ between a capital city and elsewhere.
Where you have already paid fees or a deposit, that reduces the amount you need to show, but you must evidence the payment with a receipt or a confirmation from the institution. A claim that you have paid, without the document, does not reduce the requirement.
The holding period, and why it defeats people
Several systems require the funds to have been held for a continuous period of consecutive days ending shortly before the application date, commonly twenty-eight days. The requirement is not that the average balance was sufficient. It is that the balance was at or above the required level on every single day of that period.
That means a transfer out and back, an automatic bill payment, or a temporary dip caused by a card transaction can break the period. So can moving money between your own accounts, because the statement for the account you rely on shows a lower balance on the day of the transfer.
Start the clock deliberately. Move the money into the account you will use, then leave it entirely alone. Put any standing orders or direct debits on a different account. Take a statement dated within the permitted window before the application, and read it day by day to confirm no dip occurred.
- The balance must be at or above the required level on every day of the holding period
- Standing orders and card payments on the same account can break continuity
- Take the statement within the window the rules allow before applying
- Read the statement line by line rather than checking only the opening and closing figures
Whose money is acceptable
Your own account is always acceptable. A parent's or legal guardian's account is usually acceptable with written consent confirming that the funds are available to you for your studies, plus a document evidencing the relationship such as a birth certificate. A spouse's account may be acceptable in some systems and not others.
Accounts belonging to siblings, uncles, aunts, family friends or employers are generally not accepted for maintenance purposes, however genuine the arrangement. If a relative outside the permitted category is funding you, the practical solution is usually to transfer the money into an acceptable account and then begin the holding period, which takes planning.
Company accounts are not acceptable for personal maintenance even if you own the company. Where a business is the source, transfer the funds as a drawing or salary into a personal account first and evidence the transfer.
Loans, scholarships and official sponsorship
Education loans are accepted in many systems, but only from permitted sources and only where the loan letter contains the required elements: your name, the lender's details, the amount, the date, confirmation that the funds are available to you for study and living costs, and confirmation of any conditions. A sanction letter that says the loan is subject to further approval is not evidence of available funds.
Scholarships and official financial sponsorship must be evidenced by a letter from the sponsoring organisation on their letterhead, specifying what is covered and for what period. Where a sponsor covers only fees, you still need to evidence living costs yourself.
Where an official sponsor has funded you within a recent period, some systems require their written consent before you can apply for further permission. Check this if you have held a scholarship, because it is easy to overlook and it will stop an application.
Format requirements that cause refusals
Financial documents usually have to show your name, the account number, the financial institution's name and logo, the date of the statement, and the balance including the required period. Electronic statements are widely accepted, but they must be the official document rather than a screenshot or a printed web page.
Where a bank letter is used instead of statements, it must typically be dated within a short window before the application and must contain all the same elements. Ask your bank specifically for a letter meeting those requirements rather than accepting a generic balance confirmation.
Documents not in the required language need a certified translation. Currency conversion is normally done by the authority using a published exchange rate on the date of application, so leave a margin above the minimum to absorb rate movement. A file that met the requirement at last month's rate and fails at today's is a genuinely common and avoidable refusal.
Building the timeline
Work backwards: course start date, then the application, then the holding period, then the date funds must be in place. Add time for obtaining a CAS or equivalent, any English test, any medical or clearance requirement, and any certified translations.
In practice that means having the money in the right account two to three months before the course begins, not two weeks. Families arranging funds through property sales or fixed deposit maturities need longer still, and those transactions rarely complete on schedule.
We map this out for students at the start rather than the end, because the financial timeline is the constraint that determines everything else. Alif Visa helps prepare and check the evidence against the current published requirements; the assessment itself is made by the relevant immigration authority, and the rules on amounts and holding periods are theirs.
Alif Visa is a private visa assistance service. We are not a government department, embassy or visa application centre, and decisions are made solely by the issuing authority. Rules and fees change without notice, so confirm the requirements that apply to your circumstances before you travel.
